A practical guide to the 2027 international student intakes across the UK, Canada, Australia and the USA — when each intake opens, what to prepare, and a month-by-month timeline you can actually follow.
If you are aiming to start a degree abroad in 2027, the work starts now. The single biggest reason strong applicants miss their preferred intake is not weak grades — it is starting three months too late and running out of room for an English test retake, a delayed transcript or a visa queue.
This guide sets out what the 2027 intakes actually look like across the four most popular destinations for Indian and other international students, what you need to prepare, and a month-by-month timeline you can work backwards from.
The 2027 intakes at a glance
Each country runs its academic year differently. The table below shows the main entry points and the rough window in which you should be applying.
| Destination | Main intake | Secondary intakes | Typical application window |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | September 2027 | January 2027 / January 2028 (course dependent) | From September 2026 |
| Canada | September 2027 (Fall) | January 2027 (Winter), May 2027 (Summer) | 9–12 months ahead |
| Australia | February 2027 | July 2027, some November intakes | 6–9 months ahead |
| United States | Fall (August/September) 2027 | Spring (January) 2027 | 10–12 months ahead |
A caution that applies to every row: individual universities set their own closing dates, and they differ widely even within one country. Treat the windows above as planning guidance and confirm the exact date on the course page of each university you apply to.
September/Fall — the big one
September (called Fall in North America) is the main intake everywhere. It has the widest choice of courses, the most scholarship funding attached to it, and the fullest cohort of students starting alongside you. It is also the most competitive, and the one where late applications hurt most.
January/February — the genuine second chance
January in the UK, Canada and the USA, and February in Australia, is a real intake rather than a consolation prize — but the course list is shorter. If a specific programme matters more to you than starting six months sooner, it is usually better to wait for September than to switch to a course you did not want.
May and July intakes
Canada runs a smaller May (Summer) intake, mostly at colleges and for a limited set of programmes. Australia's July intake is substantial and well supported, and for many courses it is a full alternative to February rather than a fallback.
When should you actually start?
Work backwards from your intake, not forwards from today. For a September 2027 start, the honest answer is that preparation should begin around 12 to 15 months ahead — so mid-2026 for a September 2027 start. That sounds excessive until you list what has to happen in sequence:
- English test booking, preparation, the test itself, and room for one retake
- Transcripts and degree certificates issued and, where required, attested
- Shortlisting, then writing a statement of purpose that is not generic
- Recommendation letters from people who are often slow to respond
- University applications, then waiting weeks or months for decisions
- Accepting an offer, paying a deposit, receiving your CAS or CoE or I-20
- Assembling financial evidence that has to sit in an account for a set period
- The visa application itself, plus biometrics and processing time
Any one of those steps slipping is survivable. Two slipping at once is what costs people their intake.
English language requirements
Almost every English-taught programme requires proof of English proficiency, usually IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL or an equivalent accepted by the institution.
Two rules matter more than the specific score:
- The university's requirement and the visa requirement are separate. A course may ask for more than the visa minimum. You must satisfy both, and the higher of the two is what you actually need.
- Test acceptance varies. Not every institution accepts every test, and some visa routes require a test from an approved list taken at an approved centre. Check the course page and the relevant government page before you book.
Practical advice: sit your test early enough that a retake still fits inside your timeline. Scores are typically valid for two years, so testing in 2026 for a 2027 intake is usually fine — confirm the validity window with the institution.
Academic documents
Start collecting these before you need them, because issuing offices work slowly:
- Class 10 and 12 marksheets and certificates
- Degree transcripts for every year or semester completed
- Provisional or final degree certificate
- Passport, valid well beyond your intended travel date
- English test scorecard
- Letters of recommendation — academic, professional, or both
- Statement of purpose or personal statement
- CV, particularly for postgraduate and work-experience-based courses
- Where relevant: work experience letters, portfolio, research proposal
Financial planning
Budget in three parts: tuition, living costs, and the money you must be able to show for a visa. The third is not the same as the first two, and it catches people out.
Verified visa-evidence figures as at September 2026:
- United Kingdom: £1,529 per month for courses in London and £1,171 per month outside London, for up to nine months. These funds must be held for at least 28 consecutive days, with the end of that period falling within 31 days of your application date. This is on top of tuition. (GOV.UK)
- Canada: for applications submitted on or after 1 September 2026, a single applicant outside Quebec must show CAD $23,448 for living expenses — not including tuition or travel. IRCC updates this figure each September. (IRCC)
- Australia: applicants must evidence funds covering 12 months of living costs, course fees and travel. Home Affairs publishes the current figure and an official Document Checklist Tool — use it, because this amount has been revised more than once in recent years.
Plan for the money to be visible in an acceptable account, in an acceptable form, for the required period. A loan sanction letter, a sponsor's affidavit and a fixed deposit are not interchangeable — each country specifies what it accepts.
A month-by-month timeline for a September 2027 start
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Jun–Aug 2026 | Decide destination and course type. Research entry requirements. Begin English test preparation. |
| Sep–Oct 2026 | Sit your English test. Build a shortlist of 6–10 universities across ambitious, realistic and safe options. UK undergraduate applicants: UCAS submissions open 1 September 2026, and the 15 October 2026 deadline applies to Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, veterinary and dentistry courses. |
| Nov–Dec 2026 | Draft your SOP and request recommendation letters. Begin university applications. Research scholarships — many close far earlier than course deadlines. |
| Jan–Feb 2027 | UK undergraduate equal consideration deadline is 13 January 2027 (18:00 UK time). Submit remaining applications. Start assembling financial documents. |
| Mar–Apr 2027 | Offers arrive. Compare them on cost, course content and outcomes, not just ranking. Accept your firm choice and pay any deposit. |
| May–Jun 2027 | Receive your CAS, CoE or I-20. Ensure funds are in place and have been held for the required period. Prepare your visa application. |
| Jun–Jul 2027 | Lodge your visa application. Book biometrics. Arrange accommodation. |
| Aug 2027 | Visa decision. Book flights, arrange insurance, plan your arrival and first week. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying to one country only. Requirements and processing times shift. A parallel application elsewhere is insurance, not disloyalty.
- Treating the visa financial requirement as an afterthought. Funds usually need to be held for a set period before you apply. Moving money in the week before submission is a common refusal reason.
- Recycling one statement of purpose across ten universities. Admissions teams read thousands of these. A generic one is visible immediately.
- Missing scholarship deadlines. Many close months before the course deadline, and several require you to apply separately.
- Relying on agent blogs for rules. Immigration rules are published by governments and change without notice. Check the official page.
- Booking the English test too late. Leave room for one retake.
Frequently asked questions
Is the September 2027 intake harder to get into than January?
It is more competitive in the sense that more people apply, but it also has far more places, more courses and more funding. For most students September remains the better option.
How early can I apply for a 2027 intake?
It depends on the institution. UK undergraduate applications for 2027 entry could be submitted through UCAS from 1 September 2026. Many postgraduate courses open roughly a year before the start date, and some operate rolling admissions. Check each course page.
Do I need my visa financial documents at application stage?
Usually not for the university application, but yes for the visa — and the funds often need to have been held for a defined period beforehand. Start planning early even though you submit later.
Can I work while studying?
Most student visas allow limited work, with conditions that vary by country and visa type, and those conditions change. Check the official immigration website for your destination, and do not build your budget on expected earnings.
What if a 2027 deadline has not been published yet?
Some universities publish 2027 dates only a few months ahead. Where a date is not yet confirmed, work to the previous cycle's date as a planning assumption and check the official page regularly — do not treat last year's date as certain.
