Australia's 2027 intakes explained — February and July entry, the application timeline, offer letters and CoE, the Genuine Student requirement, financial capacity evidence and student visa steps.
Australia's academic year runs on the southern hemisphere calendar, which is the single most useful thing to understand when planning your application. The year starts in February, not September — so the timeline that works for the UK or Canada will leave you months late here.
The 2027 intakes
| Intake | Starts | Apply by (typical) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 | Late February 2027 | Aug – Nov 2026 | The main intake. Widest course choice and most scholarships. |
| Semester 2 | July 2027 | Mar – May 2027 | A full second intake for many courses, not a fallback. |
| Additional | Nov 2027 / trimester starts | Varies | Some universities and private providers run extra start points. |
Universities set their own closing dates, and they differ between institutions and between courses at the same institution. Confirm on the course page.
February or July?
February gives you the fullest set of courses, the largest intake cohort and the best alignment with scholarship rounds and graduate recruitment. July is a genuine alternative with good course coverage — useful if you need extra time for an English retake or to assemble finances. If your specific course runs only in February, waiting is usually better than switching course.
Application timeline for February 2027
- Aug – Oct 2026: shortlist universities, sit your English test, request documents.
- Sep – Nov 2026: submit applications. Many Australian universities assess quickly, often in a few weeks.
- Oct – Dec 2026: receive offers, accept, pay your deposit.
- Nov 2026 – Jan 2027: receive your CoE, arrange OSHC, lodge your student visa application.
- Jan – Feb 2027: visa decision, flights, accommodation, arrival.
Australian processing is generally faster than the UK or Canada at the admissions stage, but do not compress the visa stage — it is where the time actually goes.
CRICOS: check the course before you apply
Australia runs a public register called CRICOS — the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students. Any provider delivering courses to international students on a student visa must be CRICOS-registered, and the specific course must be registered too.
This matters more than it sounds. A provider can be reputable and still offer some courses that are not CRICOS-registered — those cannot support a student visa. Before you pay an application fee, search the official CRICOS register for the provider and the exact course code. Your offer letter and CoE will carry that code; it should match.
Choosing where to study
Australia's cost of living varies sharply by city, and that difference often outweighs modest differences in tuition.
- Sydney and Melbourne — the largest student populations, the widest course choice and the strongest graduate job markets, but the most expensive housing and the tightest rental competition.
- Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra — generally lower living costs with strong universities. Some regional areas also carry specific incentives; check current policy rather than older articles, as regional settings change.
- Regional campuses — lower costs and smaller cohorts. The Destination Australia Program funds providers to offer scholarships of up to AUD $15,000 per year to students studying at regional campuses, and international students are eligible alongside domestic students. Applications are made through the provider, not the government.
Weigh the total annual cost — tuition plus rent plus transport — rather than tuition alone.
From offer letter to CoE
The sequence matters, because the visa depends on the last step:
- Offer letter. Usually conditional — subject to final transcripts, an English score or other conditions.
- Meet the conditions and receive an unconditional offer.
- Accept the offer and pay the deposit (commonly part of the first semester's tuition).
- Receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) — the official electronic record of your enrolment.
You need a CoE to lodge a student visa application. Check every detail on it before applying.
The Genuine Student requirement
For applications lodged on or after 23 March 2024, the Genuine Student (GS) requirement replaced the former Genuine Temporary Entrant test. You must demonstrate that studying in Australia is the primary reason for your application.
In practice you answer targeted questions about your circumstances, your course choice and your plans. What helps:
- A clear explanation of why this course at this provider, connected to your previous study or work
- An honest account of any gaps in study or changes of field
- Evidence your finances are genuine and genuinely available to you
- Consistency — your answers, documents and course choice should tell one coherent story
Write your own responses. Generic or templated answers are precisely what this assessment is designed to surface.
Financial capacity
You must show funds that are genuinely available to you covering, for 12 months: course fees, living costs, travel to Australia, and schooling costs for any school-aged dependants.
On the exact amount: Home Affairs has revised the living-cost figure more than once in recent years, and the current amount was not published on the general Study Australia visa page at the time this article was checked (21 September 2026). Rather than quote a figure that may be out of date, use the official Document Checklist Tool on the Home Affairs website, which returns the requirements that apply to your specific circumstances. Confirm the figure before you assemble your evidence.
"Genuinely available" is the operative phrase: funds borrowed briefly to pass a check, or held by someone with no clear relationship to you, will not satisfy the requirement.
Student visa costs and health cover
- Visa application charge: from AUD $2,500 per application from 1 July 2026, unless you are exempt. Budget for it separately — it is not refundable if your application is unsuccessful.
- Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC): you must maintain adequate health insurance for the whole of your stay. Most students arrange this through their provider when accepting an offer.
English language requirements
Universities set course-level English requirements — commonly IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT or an accepted equivalent — and the student visa has its own English requirements, which depend on your circumstances and course. These are separate tests of the same thing: satisfy whichever is higher, and confirm both on the course page and the Home Affairs website.
Scholarships
Most funding for international students in Australia comes from universities themselves — merit scholarships and partial fee reductions, often assessed automatically from your application. Government-funded awards exist but are narrower: Australia Awards Scholarships, for instance, are development-focused, run to a fixed annual cycle (rounds have opened on 1 February and closed on 30 April), and place recipients at participating Australian institutions rather than one named university.
Apply for your course early: many university scholarships are allocated on a rolling basis and run out. See our scholarships listing for current opportunities.
Accommodation
Options include university-managed residences, purpose-built student accommodation, homestay and private rentals. University accommodation is simplest for a first semester and usually opens for application once you hold an offer. Sydney and Melbourne have tight rental markets — arrange something for at least your first few weeks before you fly.
Documents checklist
- Valid passport
- Academic transcripts and completion certificates
- English test results
- CV and work experience letters, where relevant
- Statement of purpose / GS responses
- Offer letter and CoE
- Financial evidence covering 12 months
- OSHC policy
- Health examination results, if required
Common mistakes
- Applying on a September timeline. Australia's main intake is February.
- Underestimating the visa charge. At AUD $2,500 and upwards it is a real budget line.
- Templated Genuine Student responses. Write your own.
- Quoting an out-of-date financial figure. Check the Document Checklist Tool at the time you apply.
- Lodging without a CoE. You need it first.
- Leaving accommodation until arrival in a tight rental market.
Frequently asked questions
Is the July intake worse than February?
No — for many courses it is a full intake. The course list is smaller, so check that your programme runs in July before planning around it.
How long does a student visa take?
Processing times vary by course level, country and time of year. Home Affairs publishes indicative times; check those rather than relying on reported timelines from other applicants.
Can I work while studying?
Student visa holders generally have limited work rights subject to conditions that have changed over time. Check your visa conditions on the Home Affairs website, and do not rely on earnings to meet the financial requirement.
Do I need to show funds even with a scholarship?
If a scholarship covers tuition or living costs, that funding can usually be counted — but you must evidence it formally. Any remaining gap must still be demonstrated.
What if my course's 2027 date is not published?
Use the previous cycle's date for planning only and check the official course page for confirmation. Do not assume dates carry over unchanged.
